Using sunscreen daily to protect your skin

As a child I remember spending the entire day in the swimming pool on a hot summers day. My mom would apply sunscreen onto us at the start of the day and by the end we wouldn’t have burnt. However with today’s sun I can’t spend an hour without sunscreen and not turn a shade of red.

You would think that with the amount of information now available on protecting yourself against the risks of sun exposure, people would be lathering up with sunscreen. However I am still amazed at how many people don’t use it. Unfortunately beauties, a hat is just not going to cut it!

I can’t stress enough the importance of using sunscreen daily to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. If there is one beauty tip I can give you, it would be to apply sunblock to your face everyday.

In a study reported  in the medical journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, researchers wanted to calculate for the first time the effect of sunlight alone. UV rays accounted for  80 percent of skin ageing, including wrinkles, in a study of almost 300 women – half sun-worshippers and half  shy of the sun. The study also found that a two percent increase in  skin damage ages a face by three years. Even more reason to start lathering on that sunscreen!

Here are a few sunscreens I have recently tried and tested:

SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 - R554

This light, non-oily textured sunscreen has become my favourite everyday product. The universal tint means it works well on all skin tones because it contains red, black and yellow pigments. Shake product before use the activate tint. Provides high protection, is paraben and fragrance free, making it suitable for sensitive skin. Plus it is loaded with antioxidants. This product is definitely worth the splurge.

Fernblock Heliocare Advanced Gel SPF 50 - R285

Even though the gel like formula has a thicker texture when applied it is non-greasy and doesn’t leave a white residue. It is quickly absorbed into the skin and provides high protection. Suitable for use on skins that have just undergone treatments like laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Piz Buin Aloe Vera Sun Lipstick - R41.95
